ENGLISH EDITION
Onsen and ryokan for the first time: the steps that remove stress
A ryokan stay and onsen bath can look formal from outside, but the sequence is what makes them comfortable. Read the property's guidance, watch the flow and ask when a symbol is unclear. Nobody expects you to know everything before arrival.
From the entrance to your room
Remove shoes where staff indicate or where the floor level changes. Use the provided slippers, remembering that toilet slippers do not return to the room. At check-in, confirm dinner, breakfast and final bathing times. Your bedding may be prepared while you eat dinner.
The public-bath sequence
Leave clothes and belongings in the changing room, then enter the washing area with only the small towel. Sit, wash body and hair, and rinse every trace of soap. Enter slowly, keeping towel and hair outside the bath. An onsen is for quiet soaking, not swimming or loud conversation.
Privacy and tattoos
Policies vary by property: some prohibit tattoos, while others accept small covers or offer particular times or private baths. Confirm in writing before booking. If a public bath feels uncomfortable, search for a kashikiri-buro or an in-room bath and verify what “private” means in the booking description.
Health and comfort
Water can be very hot. Enter gradually, hydrate and leave if you feel dizzy or experience palpitations. Pregnant travelers and anyone with heart, blood-pressure or other health conditions should seek medical advice and check the spring's properties. Do not bathe after drinking alcohol.
Dinner and yukata
A yukata can usually be worn around the ryokan according to house guidance, with the left side over the right. Traditional meals arrive in courses and may start at a fixed time, so tell the property about allergies or dietary needs when booking—not after sitting at the table.
Japwa field note: reserve a private bath if it will make you more comfortable. The purpose is calm, not passing a test.
